A comparison of fast destruction methods for the determination of trace metals in biological materials OMA
Luyten, S.; Smeyers-Verbeke, J.; Massart, D.L..
In clinical chemistry it can be very useful to have a rapid method for the determination of trace elements in biological material available. Because the classical wet digestion method which is generally used for the destruction of biological materials requires much attention, two procedures were tried which should be less time consuming or require less attention. The two new procedures which are the soluene (a quaternary ammonium hydroxide) method of Jackson (1) and the method of Adrian (2) utilizing pressure were applied to the determination of Cu and Zn in human brain tissue and in fish meal by atomic absorption spectroscopy.

Accumulation of trace metals in some benthic invertebrate and fish species revelant to their concentration in water and sediment of lake qarun, Egypt OceanDocs
Fishar, M.R.A.; Ali, M.H.H..
Concentrations of major metals (Na, K, Ca, Mg) and some trace metals (Fe, Zn, Mn, Ni, Cu, Co, Pb, Cr, Cd) were determined in water, sediment, benthos and some common fish species from Lake Qarun. Water and sediment samples were collected from seven stations where, the benthos and fish species were collected from three sites representing east, middle and west of the lake. Distribution of studied metals showed that, east part generally had higher contamination than west one which may be attributed to the impact of pollution sources in this area which coming from El-Batts Drain and pumping station in the east part. Mollusca and Crustacea especially Barnacles have the highest concentrations of most heavy metals measured more than Polychaeta which make them...

Assessment of contaminant concentrations in sediments, fish and mussels sampled from the North Atlantic and European regional seas within the ICON project ArchiMer
Robinson, Craig D.; Webster, Lynda; Martinez-gomez, Concepcion; Burgeot, Thierry; Gubbins, Matthew J.; Thain, John E.; Vethaak, A. Dick; Mcintosh, Alistair D.; Hylland, Ketil.
Understanding the status of contaminants in the marine environment is a requirement of European Union Directives and the Regional Seas Conventions, so that measures to reduce pollution can be identified and their efficacy assessed. The international ICON workshop (Hylland et al., in this issue) was developed in order to test an integrated approach to assessing both contaminant concentrations and their effects. This paper describes and assesses the concentrations of trace metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and polychlorinated biphenyls in sediments, mussels, and fish collected from estuarine, coastal and offshore waters from Iceland to the Mediterranean Sea. For organic contaminants, concentrations progressively increased from Iceland, to the...

Biological availability of sediment-bound trace metals. ArchiMer
Luoma, S.
It has been established that direct uptake of (at least some) trace metals from sediments contributes to metal concentrations in benthic organisms. Important controls on metal uptake from sediment are the concentration of the exposure, the partitioning of the metals among components of the sediment, and the redox potential of the sediment. Important problems in ecology, physiology, geochemistry and biogeochemistry remain unresolved, however, and a concentrated interdisciplinary research effort will be necessary before a complete understanding of the fate and impact of sediment-bound metals will be possible.

Characterization and sources of colored dissolved organic matter in a coral reef ecosystem subject to ultramafic erosion pressure (New Caledonia, Southwest Pacific) ArchiMer
Martias, Chloe; Tedetti, Marc; Lantoine, Francois; Jamet, Leocadie; Dupouy, Cecile.
The eastern lagoon of New Caledonia (NC, Southwest Pacific), listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, hosts the world's second longest double-barrier coral reef. This lagoon receives river inputs, oceanic water arrivals, and erosion pressure from ultramafic rocks, enriched in nickel (Ni) and cobalt (Co). The aim of this study was to characterize colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM), as well as to determine its main sources and its possible relationships (through the use of Pearson correlation coefficients, r) with biogeochemical parameters, plankton communities and trace metals in the NC eastern lagoon. Water samples were collected in March 2016 along a series of river/lagoon/open-ocean transects. The absorption coefficient at 350 nm (a(350)) revealed...

Chemical composition of phytoplankton from the estuaries of Eastern Amazonia Acta Amazonica
Vilhena,Maria do Perpetuo Socorro Progene; Costa,Marcondes Lima da; Berrêdo,José Francisco; Paiva,Rosildo Santos; Almeida,Pryscila Denise.
Phytoplankton is important bioindicator of chemical and biological modifications of natural ecosystems. The objective of this study was to determine the total chemical composition of the phytoplankton of the Pará and Mocajuba estuaries on the eastern coast of the Amazon region in the Brazilian state of Pará. The chemical composition of the surface water, bottom sediments (total sample and bioavailable fraction), and the phytoplankton were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Phytoplankton contained high concentrations of Ca, P, Mn, Fe, Zn, Al, Ba, and Pb. The phytoplankton of the Mocajuba estuary is rich in Fe (2,967-84,750 µg g-1), while those from the Pará is rich in Al (1,216-15,389 µgg-1), probably reflecting...

Comparison in waterborne Cu, Ni and Pb bioaccumulation kinetics between different gammarid species and populations: Natural variability and influence of metal exposure history ArchiMer
Urien, N.; Farfarana, A.; Uher, E.; Fechner, Lise; Chaumot, A.; Geffard, O.; Lebrun, J. D..
Kinetic parameters (uptake from solution and elimination rate constants) of Cu, Ni and Pb bioaccumulation were determined from two Gammarus pulex and three Gammarus fossrum wild populations collected from reference sites throughout France in order to assess the inter-species and the natural inter-population variability of metal bioaccumulation kinetics in that sentinel organism. For that, each population was independently exposed for seven days to either 2.5 mu g L-1 Cu (39.3 nM), 40 mu g L-1 Ni (681 nM) or 10 mu g L-1 Pb (48.3 nM) in laboratory controlled conditions, and then placed in unexposed microcosms for a 7-day depuration period. In the same way, the possible influence of metal exposure history on subsequent metal bioaccumulation kinetics was...

Concentrations of mercury and other trace elements in two offshore skates: sandy ray Leucoraja circularis and shagreen ray L. fullonica ArchiMer
Nicolaus, E. E. Manuel; Barry, Jon; Bolam, Thi P. C.; Lorance, Pascal; Marandel, Florianne; Phillips, Sophy R. Mccully; Neville, Suzanna; Ellis, Jim R..
Trace metal concentrations in muscle and liver tissues from two offshore species of skate were examined. Concentrations of mercury in muscle of Leucoraja circularis (n = 20; 23–110.5 cm total length, 157–490 m water depth) and L. fullonica (n = 24; 28.5–100 cm total length, 130–426 m water depth) were 0.02–1.8 and 0.04–0.61 mg kg− 1, respectively. Concentrations of both As and Hg increased with total length. Only the largest specimen had a concentration of Hg in muscle > 1.0 mg kg− 1. Data were limited for specimens > 90 cm long, and further studies on contaminants in larger-bodied skates could usefully be undertaken.

Developing Autonomous Observing Systems for Micronutrient Trace Metals ArchiMer
Grand, Maxime M.; Laes, Agathe; Fietz, Susanne; Resing, Joseph A.; Obata, Hajime; Luther, George W.; Tagliabue, Alessandro; Achterberg, Eric P.; Middag, Rob; Tovar-sánchez, Antonio; Bowie, Andrew R..
Trace metal micronutrients are integral to the functioning of marine ecosystems and the export of particulate carbon to the deep ocean. Although much progress has been made in mapping the distributions of metal micronutrients throughout the ocean over the last 30 years, there remain information gaps, most notable during seasonal transitions and in remote regions. The next challenge is to develop in situ sensing technologies necessary to capture the spatial and temporal variabilities of micronutrients characterized with short residence times, highly variable source terms, and sub-nanomolar concentrations in open ocean settings. Such an effort will allow investigation of the biogeochemical processes at the necessary resolution to constrain fluxes, residence...

Effect of local hydroclimate on phytoplankton groups in the Charente estuary ArchiMer
Guesdon, Stephane; Stachowski-haberkorn, Sabine; Lambert, Christophe; Beker, Beatriz; Brach-papa, Christophe; Auger, Dominique; Bechemin, Christian.
This study aimed to describe seasonal variations of phytoplankton abundances in relation to the physical and chemical (nutrients and metals) environment under the influence of freshwater input in the Charente river estuary (Marennes-Oléron bay, France) over three years, from 2011 to 2014. Phytoplankton abundances were determined using microscopy and flow cytometry. Considering high frequency temperature and salinity data, breakpoints in each series led to the identification of two local hydroclimatic periods: the first (2011 and early 2012) being warmer and higher in salinity than the second (from spring 2012 to the beginning of 2014). A multiblock PLS analysis highlighted the significant contribution of the physical environment (temperature, salinity and...

Etude du comportement des éléments traces en milieu estuarien : approche expérimentale et modélisation : Application à l'étude de la spéciation de Cd, Co et Cs dans les estuaires majeurs français (Seine, Loire, Gironde, Rhône) ArchiMer
Dange, Catherine.
Most of trace elements have a non conservative behavior in estuarine environments. It is the case of cadmium, cobalt and caesium for which the fate in estuarine and coastal zones is largely controlled by their distribution between water and suspended particles, which generally have high residence times or can be definitely deposited in these areas. Metallic contaminants and radionuclides can be present under various species : dissolved (mineral and organic complexes), colloidal and particulate forms (adsorbed, precipitated) or integrated by various mechanisms in the organisms. Such distributions are the result of processes (physical, chemical, biological) which are controlled by many factors (ionic strengh, pH, Eh, major cations concentration, nature and...

Evaluation of trace metals (cadmium, chromium, copper and zinc) in tissues of a commercially important fish (Leporinus obtusidens) from Guaíba Lake, Southern Brazil BABT
Costa,Silene de Carvalho; Hartz,Sandra Maria.
Concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn were determined in liver and muscle of Leporinus obtusidens. During 2003, the fishes (N = 54) were sampled from three sites along Guaíba Lake (north, central and south zones). The hypotheses tested assumed that there were differences in the location and date as to levels of contamination, association between the trace metal content in the fishes and size, and that the sex influenced metal accumulation. Possible risks of contaminated fish consumption to human health were also evaluated. The level of mean concentration (µg/g) of metals in tissues was higher in liver than muscle: [Cd] = 2.32♂; [Cr] = 0.08♀; [Cu] = 30.82♀ and [Zn] = 97.77♀. The results showed differences between the local and date sampling for all metals...

Interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere occur at the air-sea interface through the transfer of momentum, heat, gases and particulate matter, and through the impact of the upper-ocean biology on the composition and radiative properties of this boundary layer. The Tara Pacific expedition, launched in May 2016 aboard the schooner Tara, was a 29-month exploration with the dual goals to study the ecology of reef ecosystems along ecological gradients in the Pacific Ocean and to assess inter-island and open ocean surface plankton and neuston community structures. In addition, key atmospheric properties were measured to study links between the two boundary layer properties. A major challenge for the open ocean sampling was the lack of ship-time available...
